About living and teaching in Taiwan

What are the essential requirements to teach in Taiwan?

To be eligible for a teaching position in Taiwan, candidates must meet certain essential criteria. These include being a native English speaker and passport holder. Additionally, having a university degree is a requirement; however, in some cases, an associate degree combined with a TEFL certificate may be accepted as an alternative qualification. Furthermore, applicants must provide a criminal background check from their home country.

Are there any preferred requirements for teaching in Taiwan?

While the essential requirements are non-negotiable, there are some preferred requirements for applicants. One such preference is that if you are applying from outside Taiwan, you should be eligible for visa-exempt entry. This means nationals from countries like the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand are highly preferred due to their eligibility for visa-exempt entry into Taiwan.

What does the typical teaching position in Taiwan entail?

Teaching positions in Taiwan offer several key features. Firstly, a 12-month contract that is based at a specific branch or location within Taiwan. Candidates have the flexibility to accept or reject the location before making a final commitment. Additionally, upon completion of their contract, teachers have the option to transfer to a different branch or location. Typically, candidates receive a provisional schedule and a factsheet for the school along with their contract. Teaching schedules generally consist of 5 days a week, mostly Monday-Friday, with classes typically scheduled in the afternoons and evenings, although some schedules may include morning classes. Teachers are responsible for instructing a variety of students, including Very Young Learners, Elementary School, and Junior High School-aged students, in an extra-curricular classroom setting. Our schools provide comprehensive course guides, materials, and resources. Moreover, initial training and ongoing academic support are part of the package, and there is a TEYL training week scheduled every month, with no set hiring seasons, as hiring takes place throughout the year.

In which locations are the teaching jobs in Taiwan?

We recruit teachers for various locations in Taiwan. Some very common locations typically hiring throughout the year, include Taipei (Taipei City and New Taipei City), Hsinchu, Taichung, Changhua, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. Less common locations that may have opportunities include Taoyuan, Miaoli, Keelung, Yunlin, and Pingtung.

What are the benefits of teaching in Taiwan?

Teaching in Taiwan comes with a range of benefits. This includes competitive hourly pay, typically ranging from NT$600-700, based on qualifications and experience. Teachers can also expect performance-related pay increases every 6 months and an automatic pay increase every 12 months. Additionally, there is a contract completion bonus awarded every 12 months, starting at NT$15,000 for the 1st year and increasing to NT$40,000 or more for the 4th year and beyond. The benefits package also includes paid training, which involves in-person training at the Head Office for 1 week, including observations. Paid annual leave (pro-rata) and unpaid leave are available when needed. To provide financial stability during transitional periods, new teachers receive a Teaching Hours Allowance (THA), which guarantees payment for 20 hours per week for the first 4 months, regardless of the actual teaching hours. The schools also offer a management pathway and opportunities for growth, development, and career advancement within the organization.

What welfare benefits are provided by the schools in Taiwan?

The schools offer various welfare benefits to support teachers in Taiwan. These benefits include pre-arrival guidance and onboarding training to help teachers transition smoothly into their roles. The school also provides assistance with work permit and ARC (resident permit) processing, as well as health insurance sponsorship. For accommodations, the schools offer a hotel subsidy of NT$500 per night for up to 10 nights and access to discounted hotel deals. Teachers also receive assistance in finding an apartment and opening a bank account. Importantly, the school ensures complete and continuous support for teachers, both inside and outside the classroom, to make their experience in Taiwan as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
